Why is it Necessary to Keep Your Vehicle’s Differential Maintained?
At Bill George’s Olathe Kia, we provide our consumers with information about their vehicles because it will help them stay in optimal condition. A differential is an important component that needs to be maintained to keep your vehicle running properly.
A differential is located between the drive wheels of your vehicle. Vehicles that are equipped with a four-wheel drive system typically have a front and rear differential. A differential and transmission work together to move power from the engine to the axle that turns the wheels. Without a differential, your vehicle couldn’t turn properly. This is because the outside wheels must rotate faster than the inside wheels for the vehicle to turn, and a differential uses gears to enable the wheels to turn at different speeds.
Lubricating fluid is used to help the differential move heat away from the gears. The lubricating fluid needs to be changed to keep the differential from grinding. If it isn’t changed, it could result in expensive repairs.
